Google
Google is a search engine, quite possibly the most popular search engine at this time. It accepts free submissions and provides results for many other search engines and directories. This includes Yahoo and Netscape.

Windows Live Search
Windows Live Search is a search engine that is complementary to MSN and focuses on productivity rather than media and content. Free submissions are accepted and the underlying software powering the engine is similar to MSN. Included with Windows Live Search is OnFolio, a piece of software that allows users to save, collect, and distribute portions of websites for further use. Included are industry standards such as an image search, news search, RSS feed, mail, local search, and shopping.

DMOZ - Open Directory Project
Dmoz is a human-edited directory that accepts free submissions and they provide results for other search engines and directories so you'll get into others without having to submit to each one. These include Google and Netscape. Decide on the category you belong in, and click the "add URL" link at the top of that page. Sites generally appear within three weeks.

Yahoo
Yahoo is another human-edited directory, the oldest and most well-known, possibly. It has two submission types: "Standard," for non-commercial sites which is free, and "Yahoo Express," for business sites which costs $299 per year. This fee doesn't guarantee that you will be listed. It does guarantee that you'll get a yes or no answer within a week. Most good sites are accepted. Yahoo will pick the appropriate category for your site.
